How Social Media Reshaped Art Criticism

Social media quietly rewired art criticism. For decades, interpretation flowed in one direction: a critic wrote the narrative, and everyone else absorbed it. Now artists, collectors, and viewers speak back in real time. That shift is messy, sometimes shallow, but also liberating. I can show close-up textures, explain why I scraped through a passage, and invite questions directly from the people looking. I’m not waiting to be “discovered” in a review to speak about my own work. At the same time, I worry about speed. Algorithms reward spectacle, not depth. A painting that unfolds over hours in person can be reduced to a four-second clip. Nuance doesn’t always trend. I believe the challenge for artists now is to use these tools without letting them flatten the work. My goal is to open a door into my process without turning the studio into pure content.
