Layering Meaning

A painting is never just one moment—it’s many moments layered over time.

I build my work through layers, each one responding to what came before. Sometimes I reinforce a decision, sometimes I completely erase it. But even when something is covered, it never truly disappears.

That’s where depth comes from. Not just visually, but emotionally. You’re looking at something that has evolved rather than something that appeared fully formed. There’s a sense of history in it.

Collectors often respond to this instinctively. There’s a quiet complexity in layered work—a feeling that the painting holds more than what is immediately visible. It invites you to stay longer, to look again, to discover something new each time.

Some of the most important elements in my work are the ones just beneath the surface—barely visible, but always present, influencing everything above them.

Spend more time with a painting—what reveals itself after a few minutes?
