The Artist’s Inner Voice: Learning to Trust It

My inner voice rarely shouts; it nudges. It says, “That red needs more air,” or “Turn the canvas.” It’s easy to ignore when external noise is loud—likes, trends, friendly advice. I practice hearing it by making small bets: one mark I know is right, one edit I’ve been postponing. When those choices strengthen the painting, trust grows. The inner voice isn’t mystical; it’s the sum of practice, taste, and attention. But it does require solitude to be audible. I protect quiet pockets in my week, because without them, I default to consensus. The paintings I value most carry the grain of that voice—unfashionable some days, necessary every day.
