Thinking Outside the Box
If you ask anyone who knows me, they will probably to tell you that I hate people assuming things about me. If tell me to do something I will invariably do the opposite. I really hate being put in a box of any sort. Categorised as one thing or another! This feeling often comes across in my work, especially my Colour and Shape Series, where I explore the emotive side of simple forms - squares and circles. Mainly working with primary colours and within the boundaries if the canvas or board.
Very rarely will a shape or colour leave and overlap with the edge of the canvas, they will either have a clear border or be mis-shaped to fit within the confines of the space. However this does not mean that they lack depth, rather the opposite.
The obvious border and surrounding external edge emphasises the inner eliminates, allowing the viewer to focus on the internal structure and enter into the images as if following a path. Stepping in like Alice through the Looking Glass.
In the same way a mirror will make a room feel bigger, my images offer an opening or portal, by which one can enter another world.
So the outside of the box is actually on the inside.
