Why I Love Heavy-Body Acrylics (and When I Don’t)
Heavy-body acrylics let me sculpt light as much as colour. They carry the drag of the brush beautifully and hold gesture long after it’s made. That tactile resistance helps translate emotion into form—it’s painting as choreography. But they’re not always kind. They dry faster than I breathe, which means hesitation leaves seams. When I need softness or time for blending, I’ll mix a retarder or work wet-on-wet across smaller sections. Some days I fight the paint; some days we dance. That push-pull keeps me honest. I still use oils for depth and gloss, but acrylics match the urgency of abstraction—they reward commitment. They also make layering a joy: nothing stays precious. Each layer becomes a record of speed, decision, and surrender.
